the moon at noon

argh... i'm getting very tired of these blog targeted spam bots. i'm sure there's more that could be done to keep them out, but i just haven't had the time to research or do any programming.

anyhow... yesterday i ate lunch at the China Moon over on brainerd road with josiah and mesh -- taking part in something that is jokingly called "the moon at noon." i'm not sure i really got the reference though - something about a group of RPers who used to meet occasionally for chinese food. either way, the experience was pretty entertaining. nothing like an enormous crowd of southerners chowing down on a neverending buffet of chinese food. hmm... buffets kinda give me the creeps though. not really sure why - i guess i always wonder how high the quality of the food can be when they're cranking it out in such large batches, and basically giving it away. and then every now and then you hit that chunk of something a little too rubbery in your general tso's chicken and you have to wonder if they're not just chopping up the entire chicken and throwing it in the deep fryer...

Andy,
For what it's worth, out here in L.A. if you're getting take-out and you ask for General Tso's chicken, they look at you like you want to annex Taiwan.

Jesse and I use to have a joke that chinese restaurants could only use about 20 English words in their name: China, super, golden, garden, jade, dragon, happy, bowl, double, etc...now, I can add "moon."

In the 'burgh there was "Super Buffet" which had a mirrored-wall a the end of it's buffet. Thus, it appeared to go on forever...nearly infinite buffet, and for $6.95. (Of course, it also had Chinese MTV playing on mounted televisions).

On 1/7 I thought of you: we were the same age for two days again. Take good care.

Yours,
Rick

of course they are chopping up the whole chicken! rick, you are forgetting "wong" as a namepiece. at least every town has a chef wong's chinese restaurant. what surprises me is that none of them have come up with the ever-so obvious by-line or advertising jingle: "Eat at Chef Wong's, because a hundred million chinamen couldnt be wong!" Although, I think technically there are a hundred million chinese who are "Wong." Keep in mind, I am allowed to make jokes like this...
