...I was born a unicorn. I missed the ark but I could have sworn you'd wait for me... I was born a unicorn. I could have sworn you believed in me. Then how come all the other unicorns are dead?...We're the unicorns. We're more than horses. We're the unicorns and we're people too...
last night stephen and i drove down to atlanta to catch the unicorns show at the earl. summer hymns opened (disappointing), along with a singer-songwriter nerdkween (confusing), but the unicorns definitely stole the show. they're 3 kids (they can't be older than 21 or 22) from montreal, canada who seemed somewhat dumbfounded to find themselves in a crowded room of adoring southern fans. the trip was worth it just for the presence these guys exude on stage; trading snipes at southern proclivities with self-deprecating canadian humor.
from the foolish-music-predictions department: you heard it here first; these kids will go far. (okay, so a few other people are saying it too, but this is the first place you heard it.) they remind me of a young flaming lips - heaps of experimental vision mixed with raw pop sensibility. check out their website, their tunes, and the insightful review on pitchfork.

I think youre wrong about Summer Hymns,
my band the Quiet Ones got to open for them in
the fall and they were superb. Maybe they had an off nite but I got their e.p. and I think it is great.
I also thought Summer Hymns to be not so hot.
Posted by: beck at February 4, 2004 11:05 AMi didn't see you guys at the show!! next time you attend an indie-rock event in hotlanta, let me know cause i'll probably be there. and, i only caught the last few summer hymns songs, but yeah, they weren't as good as they sound on cd.
next shows in my calendar: mates of state, feb 20th, and lambchop, feb 21st. a weekend of hipster tunes.
yeah - i glanced around for you at one point, since i thought you might turn up there. actually thought i saw you for a minute - you weren't with a hairy guy and a short blonde chick were you?
but maybe we can meet up for a show next time - i'm eyeing the feb 18th mountain goats show at the earl myself...
Posted by: andy at February 4, 2004 03:57 PMhmm, sound a good bit like velvet underground, i like it.
Posted by: cannon at February 4, 2004 08:18 PMoooh.... i didn't know mountain goats were coming back! i've still never seen them, so i might have to save my pennies and check that out.
um, no, i have an aversion to hairy guys. i was with a short, dark haired dude and a taller blonde chick ... we were standing kinda near the bar, on the right of the couches- next to that round table-thing attached to the pole. we were playing jenga with the stacked empty pbr cans on the table-thing between songs. i lost.
ah... yeah, i didn't think it was you that i saw. we were on the other side, near the table with CDs, no jenga players in sight. i'll let you know if the mtn. goats trip comes together.
