hashing it out at the pickle barrel

ari and aaron hash it out at the pickle barrel. on friday night, while tim and ari were in town, we went down to the pickle barrel after an evening of presbytery meetings up at covenant. as often happens with this crowd, the discussion quickly turned into a number of different debates between ari, morris, and aaron. i don't remember too many of the details (adaptation vs. eternal sunshine? politically correct terms for the mentally disabled? the list goes on...) but it made for lively banter. for the most part i sat back and watched the whole thing unfold, taking sneaky pictures from table level (maybe this should be called a "beers-eye view").

...

thanks for the encouraging comments regarding yesterday's post and 6 months of photoblogging. i do plan to keep it up for the forseeable future - its just too much fun. let me know if you have any suggestions for the site.

for those of you who haven't heard, my younger brother joel has been accepted to Roger Williams University up in rhode island. not only that, he also got into the tuition exchange program (TEP) which basically means he goes to a small liberal arts college for the same price he was previously going in-state to university of florida. i was digging around online the other day for info regarding the school, and came across this aerial photo of the campus. geez... rough life.

It doesn't look like that in January

I know some folks from high school who went to Roger Williams. Being a New Englander, my knowledge of small, northeastern schools is large and useless...

This is one of the last sightings of my Johnny Damon Tribute Mullet. It looked sleek and lustrous right until the end.

Posted by: mesh at April 27, 2004 01:21 PM

you cut the mullet?
i don't know if i would say it was banter. Also, Andy you're not that innocent in these discussions, as i recall!!!! (you need to post your picture with your wrinkly face)

Mesh, I love you, and I love Johnny Damon, but I love you more, and while I'll forever remember that mullet with fondness, much like your "I'm a 45 year old half-bald man" haircut, it still needed to go the way of the dinosaur.

Ari, don't you be picking on Mesh.

I remember the half-bald haircut. It wasn't until a year or so later when I saw some drama department photos that I realized its purpose. Suddenly, Aaron seemed immensely less odd.

See, I'm convinced that there is an important distinction between the Mr. DePinna Balding Monk Cut and the much-lamented Johnny Damon Tribute Mullet. The Monk Cut was simply awful: whether I intended ironically or not didn't matter, because it was deeply and thoroughly pathetic. The JDT Mullet, on the other hand, was borderline awesome. Or awful. It all depended on what kind of hair day I was having.

so, yeah, RWU is amazing. small, friendly, good academics, has a soccer program that i can star in, and is set in absolutely beautiful surroundings. never having been to rhode island or even much of new england (save a ten day fam trip to boston), i was pleasantly suprised by the colonial architecture and how easy it was to blend in. there arent many chains of anything there, because, well, rhode island is about as big as the campus of UF. from grocery stores, to photo shops, to restaurants, each has a history and an individual charm attribute unlike any i had seen, even in small towns like chatt. for anyone who reads this, i am possibly (emphasis on possibly) looking into the major or historic restoration/preservation. does anyone have any info in this field? experience? advice? i know some of andrew michael's friends have done a bit here and there if memory serves me right. well, seeing as i had my wisdom teeth extracted yesturday, im' gonna go lounge and milk the rest time for all i can. at least now i have an excuse for not being wise ; )
FYI - Monty is my name in RI b/c there is another joel on the team that plays foreward and is in construction management.

also,
andrew michael, the TEP covered full tuition ( SWEEEEET!!!). i recently found out that over 35 people applied for it and only four were awarded the scholarship : o

congrats again brothaman... that's impressive. and good luck with the 'monty' nickname. i always tried to get that one to stick when i was in college, but with little success. maybe starting fresh in the NE is the way to go.

Joel (aka New England Monty) I hope you rock hard ass up there in New England. Keep us posted on the haps, and if you need a blog I will of course, set you up. Just dont' come back with an obnoxious new england chip on your shoulder...

Posted by: JosiahQ at April 27, 2004 03:12 PM

You really should get a blog, Joel. I for one would love to hear of your crazy soccer-playing snow-shoveling exploits. You could call it "Pahking the Cah," or something equally New England-esque.

Congratulations, by the way.

gel and i have garnered the somewhat derivative "the monties" w/ friends up here. it's workable. but mostly, when it comes to the nickname, we brothers have gotten a raw deal...

Posted by: jess at April 27, 2004 04:20 PM

it has worked for me here in g'ville. i dont know what yuo guys are talking abuot ;)

Posted by: monty at April 27, 2004 04:23 PM

baugh! (to borrow from monty jess...) i do love to pull in the REM reference myself as often as possible.

Posted by: andy at April 27, 2004 04:26 PM

I remember Jesse being called "the Bod" (as in "body" as in the former Minn. Gov. ex-wrestler). That wasn't a raw deal, was it?

I think that in this discussion of nicknames we have begun to neglect the things that really matter, that transcend mere labels. Such as my mullet.

Posted by: mesh at April 28, 2004 09:52 AM

no greg, i guess i shouldn't complain about that one! it had kinda slipped from memory. boy, those were heady days...

mesh, your comment reminds me of something samuel johnson said about words being the daughters of earth, and things being the sons of heaven. from what i've read and heard, though, there may be those who question whether your transcendent mullet would, in fact, qualify as a son of heaven... :)

Posted by: jess at April 28, 2004 10:36 AM

Not so much.

Posted by: mesh at April 28, 2004 10:39 AM

Omg thats right! Please come see me and my friends! ;)
