since the conclusion of the lent season, i've made a few musical purchases, but this would have to be the most significant collection of CDs i've bought in some time (perhaps ever, because i rarely do such things as buy boxsets of CDs). its the critically acclaimed 69 love songs box set by the magnetic fields. thus far i'm still working my way through disc 1, eagerly anticipating the next two. i wish there were a freebie mp3 somewhere online that i could share, but i've yet to come across one, so you may just have to go and pick it up yourself. i've always liked the magnetic fields, but when i saw pieces of april (during lent), which stephin merritt did the soundtrack for, i knew that i'd have to buy the box set at the next possible opportunity (now).
...
extra photos today: i got an email from my editor at the pulse yesterday telling me that he'd submitted my photos to a local radio station's website. apparently WGOW does a weekly review of interesing local photos and this week they're mine from the rough and rowdy brawl.
congrats man, that's pretty cool
Posted by: JosiahQ at April 28, 2004 10:32 AMYou're a talk radio star!
I was chatting with Isaac on Sunday, and we agreed that there are only two albums from the last five years that get unbelievably better with every listen (the defining trait of a great album): Wilco's "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" and The Magnetic Fields' "69 Love Songs." Can anybody think of other records that can fit in this category?
Posted by: mesh at April 28, 2004 10:38 AMam I a dork for questioning the maturity of the title of a boxed set with such a name?
Posted by: bobw at April 28, 2004 12:57 PMYes. A little.
You might question the tastefulness of the name, but calling it immature seems a bit silly. It's rock and roll. It defines immature. And that's part of why it's great. Take away the inherently transgressive nature of rock and you'd have folk music. Besides, this is more witty than stupid, anyway: it's so self-awarely goofy that it doubles back on itself (ahem) in a wonderfully PoMo way.
If the title bugs you, Bob, I wouldn't recommend the album. :)
Posted by: mesh at April 28, 2004 02:29 PMI can. The Flaming Lips- Soft Bulletin, Ben Folds- Rockin' the Suburbs,Radiohead- Kid A, and also Tenacious D.
Posted by: John Totten at April 28, 2004 03:02 PMOoh, good call on the Ben Folds. I would make a passionate argument for The White Stripes' Elephant, but I don't think anybody would agree. And I need a few months to decide, but the new Iron and Wine and Sufjan Stephens discs seem like potentials.

Posted by: mesh at April 28, 2004 03:07 PMyou're right: I need to learn not to look for maturity where it doesn't belong. and I'm coming to terms with my lack of coolness.
Posted by: bobw at April 28, 2004 04:22 PMYou're cooler than you think. You have the most awesome Gillian Welch collection in Chatty. Seriously, it's given me quite a few hours of unironic pleasure.
Posted by: mesh at April 28, 2004 05:37 PMAlbums Of last five years that get better with each listen:
1. "Wooden Smoke" by Mike Keneally
2. "Keep It Like A Secret" by Built to Spill
3. "Live" by Alison Krauss and Union Station
4. "Spirit Stereo Frequency" by All Night Radio (unbelieveably good)
If you lift the "five years limit" there are MANY more albums that would qualify. For all the Wilcos and Radioheads, the last 5-10 years of popular music -- as a whole -- has been extremely repetitive, uninspired, and filled with WAY more style than substance. I would argue that many "classic" albums of our day only sound "classic" because a) their competition is drek and b) they remind us of other, ACTUAL classic albums. (i.e--the entire Oasis catalog...)
Posted by: bill colrus at April 28, 2004 07:12 PMwhat, wha...? the entire oasis catalog is classic?
JosiahQ: going back to pop music school
Posted by: JosiahQ at April 28, 2004 10:00 PMNo, the Oasis catalog is not classic, but often referred to as such -- well, it was when they were big -- and all it is a bad Beatles impersonation.
Posted by: bill colrus at April 28, 2004 11:28 PMOmg thats right! Please come see me and my friends! ;)
