wheland comes down

i'm a bit frustrated with today's photo, because i really think it could have been so much more interesting. for weeks john sweet has been bugging me to start taking daily or even weekly pictures of the deconstruction of the old wheland foundry. they went out of business maybe a year ago and the factory has been slowly coming down piece by piece. the last week or two has seen some major changes with certain buildings actually beginning to cave in and the industrial innards spilling out. even though i expect that it will be replaced by a city park or something as ecological, its almost sad to see it come down (especially next to the shiny new sign they got about a year before going under...). anyhow, the frustrating part is that i tried to go on the property to take pictures and was quickly escorted out by a security guard. apparently i have to get written permission to be on wheland property, and without my zoom lens this is the best i could do. hopefully its only a taste of things to come - i fully expect to have some more detailed photos once i get back there with a better lens.

...

i missed the of montreal show last night - anyone have a report?

i don't think i've mentioned it before, but i'm going to colorado all next week for the vine's national meeting. they're one of our clients and have invited me out to find out more about their organization. i'm pretty excited about the whole trip, as i'll get to spend some time with jake and his fam too in colorado springs, not to mention some good discussion about christian ecumenicism at the conference.

Ya, it makes me really sad to see the Wheland foundry coming down. Like, I love seeing Chattanooga upping its image and all the development their doing, but I think it would have been great to take the foundry and make it into some kindof historical exhibit, that is, keeping chatty in touch with its industrial roots. I mean, I've always been fascinated by the foundry, the complexity, the massive interwoven machinery.

when do you leave for co? you know i grew up out there? if you're in the city or pikes peak or the academy (well, anywhere with a little bit of alt.) you can see where i lived. just turn away from the mountains and look to the very small tree line. that's the black forest. the home of butthole clubs 1-4. tip your hat or something.

hugs to jake and the fam from us.

on the practical side, it makes me sad that the foundry is gone b/c of all those jobs gone and families messed up. I think the place is ugly, but it was a good ugly.

totally unrelated but just found out brady fell off the radison. please start praying. i don't know anything else. but this is the best prayer chain i can think of.

Posted by: Anna at May 20, 2004 11:20 AM

okay, still don't know much but know that he's alive, pretty serious. at least broken limbs. please pray like crazy for him and his family, too. we're not sure if he fell all the way or if his ropes caught him and he slammed into the building. holy shit.

thanks anna - we'll definitely be praying. keep the updates coming, and call if you want to. we can spread the word here.

Holy crap.

Rumor has it that a shopping center featuring a widely-hated and blue discount store that begins with a "W" will be built on the Wheland land...

I'm serious...

update: he's in surgery. as far as i know they are removing his spleen. he's had a lot of internal bleeding. he's punctured either his liver or kidneys. he's boken his pelvis, possibly a leg, and fractured his arm pretty badly. he also broke like four ribs. apparently no head injuries. it's all pretty lousy, keep praying. we still don't know exactly how it happened.

Posted by: Anna at May 20, 2004 02:24 PM

okay, he's not quite out of surgery but he's going to be okay. he's going to be on a respirator for a while, and he'll have tubes from his stomach for drainage and he'll have to have a lot more surgeries, but he's going to be okay. i'm leaving in the am for savannah so i'll be able to tell you all more instead of relaying info. thanks for all your prayers. don't stop.
p.s. does anyone know they fix broken pelvis or hips?

yes, just ask my friend teresa white. she's fine now. it just takes a LONG time.
