i probably shouldn't admit this publicly, but the tags on my car have been expired for the last month. which, in and of itself isn't that big of a deal. (certain roommates of mine have gone years with expired tags.) however, i've also been driving on tennessee tags for a full year since moving to the state of georgia. i guess i thought there was a slim chance of me moving back over the border this summer so i just put off becoming a real-deal georgia resident as long as possible. but now i am one.
so, i want to know what's cool about being a GA resident? the hope grant for college i suppose, but that doesn't do much for me. state income taxes - ugh. what else? GA residents, do speak up...
...
some local news items of import:
1. Isaac Wardell (aforementioned roommate) is having a CD release party this coming sunday night at lamar's for his new CD bells and whistles. mason neely, his co-conspirator and producer on the album is coming down from philly just to play with him and the totten brothers will be jamming their hearts out. this is one show not to miss. the fun starts at 9pm. you can read mesh's review of the new album and his profile of isaac here. (yes, that's my photo...)
2. the AEC has released the final list for the fall indie film series. i'm pretty stoked about the line-up. as usual, it starts stronger than it ends, but i'm usually burnt out on indie flicks by that point anyways so it just saves me the trouble attending.
oops - almost forgot the mp3 again: strange bird by bobby bare jr. don't know too much about him, but i've been enjoying his tunes lately.

More house for the money, much lower property taxes, family friendly communities, great road cycling, etc. I live in GA and work in TN...despite the income tax, I expect it to be about a wash overall.
Posted by: Scott at August 20, 2004 01:16 PMYes, the HOPE which I am using to finish my art degree (thank you very much). Since I wasted 8K on Covenant. Closer to the beach, better roads, lower sales tax, better cities, an international airport that works like an international airport (unlike Memphis), Athens music, Augusta golf, better healthcare for us (poor people) and after growing up in TN I just am so glad I'm out. We've always gotten all our GA state income tax back. One bummer-you can't buy beer on Sundays.
Posted by: Katie at August 20, 2004 02:52 PMnot to sound weird, but you might want to blur out your actual license plate numbers...
the internet is nothing if not full of thieves, you know?
Posted by: bill colrus at August 20, 2004 04:04 PMCan you still use HOPE when you're your age, Katie? Dude, we should all finish our art degrees. . . Don't forget the pickups with the rebel flags. The percentage of those rises phenomenally when you cross that TN/GA border. Aah, can't wait to get back home.
Posted by: lynnp at August 20, 2004 04:07 PMwell... i mean, it is on the back of my car isn't it? i suppose they could associate it with my name, but its not like i'm posting my driver's license number or social security number on here. hmm...
Posted by: andy at August 20, 2004 05:07 PMThe state of Georgia has a really great birthday present for you -- ad valorem taxes are due that day for your car. It shouldn't be as bad in Walker county as it would be if you were in Fulton or Cobb, but they won't be fun. The amount is based on the age and value of your car.
Posted by: John at August 20, 2004 05:54 PMYou never know. Tony Campbell could come track you down. Actually, you're probably safe.
Posted by: bill colrus at August 21, 2004 03:52 PMI am trying to figure out if being paranoid about posting a license plate on the internet is a bit like building an underground dwelling with a 2 month food supply, just in case? I mean I see license plates all over the place. I'm sure there's some way that people can get that number, and wipe out your savings account, but what are the chances? Someone please explain the danger of exposing your license plate.
Posted by: Joel K at August 23, 2004 11:46 AMYes, I can get the HOPE crazy huh? I never used it before I've got 127 credits worth of free edu-ma-cation coming to me! AND it has nothing to do with AGE thank you very much, Lynn. Ms. class of 94! But you probably used the HOPE for your Coconut College degree. tooo baaad.
Oh Michael Vick is another cool thing about GA. good football. I'm forced to watch it by my husband.
Posted by: Katie at August 23, 2004 10:25 PMSpeaking as a GA resident for a whole 2 years now, well 1.5 really, its full of mirth and merriement, or perhaps if you will mary's mint, I can't remember. The advalorem thingy isn't bad, I payed mine last week, 45 bucks, not too shabby. I've payed more in St. Louis, where you have to pay to get your tags every year (which requires an environmental inspection 40$, car inspection 10$, and proof of insurance... etc) Then you have to pay for the tag itself which is 20 or bucks. Then count in the fact that your car is also considered a piece of property, so at the end of the year you pay a property tax on your car. Mine usually ran 80$ a year. All of this plus sales, income, and county taxes made things a bit pricey at times.
So a little sales tax, a little income, property tax thats only on actual property, and a small avalorem isn't bad.
The goods: You are now a dog fan instead of a vol fan. I mean what the heck is a vol anyway?? Go VOLS? Thats like yelling go Mols! What's a Mol? I don't know whats a Vol is a more poinant question. Plus if you're not a dog fan, you can go for the yellow jackets which are sort of the loveable little brother of the dog that tries hard but focuses more on school.
There's better public school, and we all know how much you want to go back to High school andy.
There's Logans Steak House in Ft O... need I say more?
There's bucks, if GA's good enough for Bucks its good enough for me.
There's cheaper gas.
There's the Holtons... which face it, statistics prove you're more likely to like where you live if the Holton's are there.
Your honor I rest my case.
Posted by: Holton at August 23, 2004 10:31 PMOmg thats right! Please come see me and my friends! ;)
