this is another shot from the weekend, saturday morning when i was working with bob demarco on his house. we we're working in the room that will become the nursery and there's a great deal of lead paint that has to be stripped and/or abated to make it safe for children. here bob is suited up with his respirator standing in what will eventually become the floor of the new bathroom. last night emily and i were over there again stripping paint and had to wear the unbearable face masks too. its no fun trying communicate with those things on, much less breathe.
...
Paul B mentioned in a comment yesterday that he's been working on the older brother demarco's (jason) house, in preparation for their next kiddo. you can see some strangely similar photos on his site.
saw two movies over the weekend, both of which left me with a quite a bit to think about. first was garden state, on friday afternoon. for some reason, probably because the trailer was so cool, i was expecting this movie to be stunningly good -- which is always a bad way to approach a movie. and actually, it was pretty great, but certainly has a few shortcomings. i'm sure mesh will dissect it nicely and since he and i tend to agree on such things and he's so much more precise in his language, we'll just wait for his review. the other was japanese story, a film my brother jesse has been wanting me to see for a while. has anyone seen this? i have to say its probably the least predictable film i've seen in a long time. very strange, very sad, and maybe a little disappointing. i don't want to give anything away, but i'd love to hear what others thought of it via email perhaps.
and finally... apple does it again. un-freakin-believable...
Posted by andy at August 31, 2004 11:09 AMive, seen japanese story and really liked it. it is a little shocking and that kind of put me back a bit. i had to stop the film for about 10min at that one point, but i really liked the pace of the film, kind of reminded me of "paris, texas" by wenders. oh yeah, i love bob demarco even when he looks scary.

And uh, how did I miss that Bob and Bethany are having a baby?
Posted by: Katie at August 31, 2004 02:55 PMHello, Clarice.
Posted by: mesh at August 31, 2004 03:13 PMAndy, you're coming up north? Where will you be in VA, and when exactly? Would love to see you. Maybe PaulB. will also be free.
yeah - i've seen japanese story, too, and my reaction was the same as yours, cannon. i loved being a bit surprised in a movie! but i thought garden state was great, andy, and would like to know why you didn't like it? and thanks for putting bob's picture on your blog! it made my day. (hi, bob.)
Posted by: becki at September 1, 2004 12:27 PMhmm... garden state. well, its not that i didn't like it. as i said, it was pretty great, just not stunning the way i had hoped. but, my reason for not liking it might be particular to me and people like me who really struggle with living in a pretty self-centered world, or as becki used to put it: andy-centric. i felt like the only character that was developed at all and whose problems we were supposed to care about was the main character's, mr braff. everyone else, though they seemed like pretty interesting types with equally (or more) difficult lives, served only to reflect the main character's angst. i don't think this ruined the movie by any stretch, it just left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth seeing alot of my own selfish traits seemingly glorified in the main character, a guy surrounded by some pretty selfless friends who never get any recognition.
Ditto. That's pretty much what I wrote...
