more accident photos

first off, if you missed yesterday's photo and post go back and read it now. it will give you a much better understanding of this photo. most of you will recognize josiah roe's truck, or what's left of it at least. i think i've taken quite a few pictures of this truck in the past year of blogging and it looks like an era may be coming to an end. i took this one after they hauled the dodge durango off on a towtruck. i still can't believe what a surreal experience the whole thing was. and only a half hour earlier a handfull of us were standing around chatting in that exact spot.

...

a few things...

paul graham has a new article up (the guy who did the really good piece on the age of the essay previously). this one's about the stock market bust. i haven't finished it yet, but i can't imagine that it won't be worth reading.

more pictures up over on montyfam.org - there's a new gallery of photos from my parents house where the hurricane dropped a huge tree on the porch and roof.

i finally got to meet nick herndon or space city ramblin' - one of my favorite blogs of late. he was at the birthday party on saturday night and we spent some time chatting cameras, photography, school and life in general. he's got another great post on his blog that i think everyone should read.

i heart huckabees came out today, though not in chattanooga of course. i finally watched the trailer and it looks pretty good. i was a big fan of three kings so i hope huckabees makes it to chatt-town before long.

and last, and least, did anyone watch the debates last night? what an unsurprising disappointment... i think i feel worse about both candidates after watching the debate, and for someone who feels like there's not much of a good option in this election, that's bad. bush seems more and more blind to his own inability to change course even when the "facts" have changed and kerry seems more and more foolishly idealistic about a situation that's clearly not as simplistic as his rhetoric implies.

"I have never wilted in my life"
John Kerry, aka: j/k

There's gonna be a scene like the one from Spiderman 2. A car's gonna come flying through the window and Brent's gonna grab Josiah and twirl him under it and land out of harm's way. And then they're gonna start kissin'. Goodness, I just realize I'm sitting at home typing about Spiderman 2 wearing a homemade Spiderman 2 t-shirt. Not only that but I didn't even make it myself, I got it as a present. What a nerd.

You nailed the debate thing right on the head. I feel the same way. I found myself asking Kerry, "That all sounds nice, but how are you actually going to get that done, and will it actually work?"
With Bush, I found myself asking, "That all sounds terrible. Why are you actually doing this? It doesn't work."

So, I get to pick between the guy who has trouble settling on what shape the peg and the hole are, or the guy whose going to use whatever size hammer is necessary to make his peg fit the whole no matter what gets damaged in the process. Neat.

As a staunch democrat I am clear about who i'm voting for, but disappointed in both of their performances in the debate. phil, you have to at least give kerry that what idealistic views he has on the present situation and his goals may not be very possible (in his time line) but we'd never be in this situation and in the conflict of the goals being difficult to accomplish if it weren't for bush's hammer that has been destroying all possibilities of idealistic pursuits!

I’m afraid, montgomerys, that getting my masters in Public Health is making more and more a democrat!

Ari -

I couldn't agree more. I am pretty much 100% with Kerry when it comes to the war in Iraq. Other issues, not so much, but definitely on this one. I actually opposed going to war in Iraq the whole time. I didn't think we had enough information to start losing lives over. So, yes, I've never thought going to war with Iraq was worth it, and even less so now that we know that none of the original justifications for going were valid.

My problems with Kerry are mostly on other issues.

Josiah! How long have you been living in Tennessee? And you still had Cali plates? For shame.

Glad no one was hurt!

I couldn't disagree more. I'm the staunch conservative that reads Andy's blog. However, I come here for the photos and that's about it. For a photoblog, there's rarely any discussion about the great pictures that get posted here. Andy, when you redesign the site you ought to consider separating the photoblog and having another blog for your other pursuits. You are really that good of a photographer. Just my opinion, take or leave it.

Posted by: Scott at October 1, 2004 11:39 PM

I couldn't disagree more than even more than that! No wait... yes, I do disagree more. And what is more, I defy you all because I am simply the most in disagreement! So there!

OK. Seriously though, Andy and fellow sick-of-both-candidate-ers, now is the time to give serious consideration to the fact that there are other legitimate political options.
Please see the "election season" block on my sidebar for further information.

Andy, just want to suggest that having the great photos *and* all this other great stuff together ought *not* to be changed. (No offense to Scott.)

Posted by: Paul B at October 3, 2004 10:45 AM

Paul, no offense taken. Andy, you mentioned a while back that one of the reasons for the photoblog was to learn how to get better, receive feedback, and have discussions about techniques perhaps.

If you really want to get that kind of feedback, like say from a forum like Photoblogs.com, it seems that this layout is not the most conducive (might I add that neither is my own photoblog...though it's just measly PDA shots).

Even if your site had a tabbed layout--one tab as the blog and one tab for the photos? I just think it would be nice to give some more real estate to the pictures. They're good photos, and would look better at a bigger size.. Here's an example of a photoblog that still has comments, but really showcases the art (Chromasia).

I like what you have here, too. There's nothing wrong with having an eclectic blog. I just thought I'd throw in some observations and suggestions.

Andy: I'm glad you aren't going to change the format of your blog...
