brooklyn bridge I

i took a series of black and white photos on brooklyn bridge when we walked across it on new year's eve. the sun was setting quickly as we walked so my options were limited but i'm happy with a few of them. however, seeing the possibilities makes me want to go back and spend a day just working on the bridge. the difficult part is that it's such a popular bridge for photography that it's difficult to create original images -- at the same time, that creates an enticing challenge for any photographer. one of these days i'll make a trip to NYC with the sole purpose of creating a series of photographs -- as soon as i get my darkroom built... that is, after i buy a house... and remodel it... and build a darkroom... and buy all that equipment. (sigh) someday...

...

the arts and education independent film series for the spring is finally ready to go. the list is online now; undertow is the one i'm most looking forward to, from director david gordon green of all the real girls. there's a bunch on there i've not heard of, but it looks promising. monday nights anyone?

yes, do come back and work on the bridge. it's such a great, great bridge, it might take you years to photograph every aspect of it... hmmm...

Talking about bridges, there is a petitioning meeting for building a hotel right by the walking bridge. it's tonight at six at the city council building. But, if your like me and can't go, you can sign a petition on line at www.ilovecoolidgepark.com. Sounds silly, I know but you should check out where they plan to put the hotel...

Nice shot. Very well framed--just enough of the tower to be understandable, but dominated by the lovely wires. Keep it up!

I wouldn't worry too much about the Coolidge Hotel. Bob Corker and every single major mayoral candidate has spoken against the location, and even the developer has expressed willingness to move his proposed building. This too shall pass.

I'd enjoy seeing more b/w architectural shots, if you're of a mind to pursue it further. Needn't be anything grand or iconic like the Brooklyn Bridge it seems to me. From what I see in your material, you've got the ability to draw out the hidden grandeur of much less seemingly obviously impressive subjects.

when you get around to shooting pittsburgh deliberately (niamh could probably tote your stuff by then ;), you should spend some time on pitt's cathedral of learning (http://tinyurl.com/4lf2r). i think its dimensions would provide you w/ a fun challenge.

and remember the PPG building? i learned, upon reading of Philip Johnson's recent death, that he designed it. a Glass House of an entirely different sort... pretty cool, no?

I came across your comment about wanting to photograph NYC while searching websites about CHOPSTIX restaurant in Gainesville, FL. Anyway, here's a series of photos I did in NYC summer 2002: http://www.jou.ufl.edu/people/faculty/jfreeman/NYC/NYCsplash.htm
