i have to say, i really love catching expressions like this. perhaps it's a typical photojournalist thing to do, but i've found that if i get my camera ready and then say the person's name, they turn and look with this very alert expression on their face. the photo almost makes you feel as though you're in a conversation with the person. they're always giving the camera this look as if they were turning to speak with it. it's one of the best ways i've found to catch someone looking totally natural.
...
one your best this year, or it maybe just my favorite so far in 05. the contrast is nice and all, how the shapes of ben's head, knee and hand with the semi circle of light, mimic one another. oooo and aaaa.

Posted by: andy at January 27, 2005 05:00 PMcat's right on.
i really like how everything in the foreground (all the stuff cat mentioned) kinda arcs 12-to-9, while softly and dimly in the background chris's (?) arm kinda balances that in a 9-to-6-ish way...
nice shot, bro
Posted by: jess at January 27, 2005 05:40 PMnice picture. but as for your technique for getting people to look natural. come on. it's ben thomas, one of the most photogenic people on earth. i know for a fact you have millions of pictures of me going "huh?..hunnggaaackthbthtpthth," with the accompanying facial expressions and eye-rolling and tongue-lolling from when you've tried that on me.
and ben would look good with carrot sticks stuck up his nose.
Posted by: jerah at January 27, 2005 06:45 PMjerah, how kind. andy will have to try a pic of me with carrots stuck up my nose to prove you right. frankly, i'm just honored to be caught in a shot with chris.
also - andy - way to go on making our apt look huge. btw, you should see it now. we have cuban yellow/orange walls with cherry wood floors. you wouldn't even recognize the place. once we get our artwork up, one could wander in and think that it's inhabited by south american roman catholics.
Posted by: ben at January 28, 2005 11:11 AMlooks like old school "rolling stones" photography. maybe annie leibovitz or linda mccarney. im sure ben's hipster look helps. i like!!
Posted by: cannon at January 28, 2005 04:45 PMAndy, do I need to have the "So you wanna date my little brother" conversation with you?
