let the non-photo-blogging begin... at least it began with a good poem.
alright - i'm amazed at how good this new decemberists album really is. i mean, i knew that it would be. the decemberists aren't like U2 or coldplay or even the flaming lips, who are destined to have incredible albums, or an incredible album, followed by weaker albums always living in the shadow of that one great moment. (i'm gonna catch hell for that, aren't i?) they're just solid and consistent, and consistently better. colin meloy is only reaching greater heights of metaphoric precision in his songs and the stories keep getting better and better. one of the high points of picaresque is an 8+ minute ballad about a mariner's son who tracks down his deadbeat dad to revenge the death of his mother. i mean, who does that? who writes ballads and gets away with calling it pop music? only the greats. only nick cave. only colin meloy.
totten has a review of it over on his blog too...
Posted by andy at March 29, 2005 03:10 PMI too am smitten with the new Decemberists album. If a passion for music can outweigh an ignorance of the world of music reviews, I also cannot help but offer my top 3 picks of the album, in case anyone else would be helped by a starting point, as it were, for listening.
In order of my own [current] personal preference, the top 3 songs are:
#1--"Eli, the barrow boy" [track 3]
#2--"We both go down together" [track 2]
#3--"On the bus mall" [track 9]
there you have it . . . my 2 cents :-)
